FONTAINEBLEAU Intimate Landscape

€65.00

Foreword by Bruce Barnbaum

This book focuses on my discoveries in the forest of Fontainebleau as well as my personal and artistic evolution through it.

The forest of Fontainebleau is known for being the cradle of French landscape painting. First the Barbizon painters and then the Impressionists, painted in Fontainebleau from 1830 to 1875. For 4 years I have literally and figuratively walked in their footsteps, photographing this open-air museum in a very personal and expressive way.

The more I spent entire days photographing in the forest, the more I experienced some of the best things life can gift: peace, awe and inspiration. It is these feelings that I strive to convay through the pages of this book.

The 180 pages are filled with 137 color photographs and 10 articles on the history of art, photography and nature.

“This superbly self-produced book presents an almost musical series of landscapes created in the forest of Fontainebleau, in the footsteps of the Barbizon painters who surveyed it in the 19th century. In his own subtle way, the Italian renews this eternal motif, peppering the work with various essays on art.”
— JULIEN BOLLE, RÉPONSES PHOTO (FRANCE) - N.376, January-February 2025
“Francesco’s book is beautifully created and goes beyond being a simple portfolio by revealing a threadlike connection with the past that rewards following.
What comes across most is a sense of connection, of someone allowing the landscape to craft them as much as they’re crafting their own interpretations. Francesco has allowed his passion and connection with the forest and its historical denizens to mediate the way he’s discovered the forest.
It’s a book well worth discovering for yourself.”
— TIM PARKING, ON LANDSCAPE (UK) - N.320, JANUARY 2025
“This passion alone is what makes his photography in the Fontainebleau forest so beautiful. His work is paired with a deep reverence for the area and for the history it contains. In this way, Carovillano is on a different level than most landscape photographers. He understands the shoulders he stands upon, and he respects them rather than imitating them.”
— Cody Schultz, Nature Vision Magazine (USA) - Issue 8, spring 2025
